We love working hard, and playing around with new movements, but nothing beats the basics. CrossFit has been given a lot of exposure by the media in recent months. Some of it has been about the positive changes it has made for it’s participants, others have been about injuries. The question is, does CrossFit really have a higher rate of injury?
As with any physical activity there is always an increased risk of hurting yourself. We could argue that the safest place to be is on the couch, but we all know that isn’t going to help us live healthy lives.
A physiotherapist friend of mine once said to me “CrossFit doesn’t necessarily cause injuries, but it does expose them”. This has stuck with me, because it’s a perfect statement for what we do. If you go from a lifestyle where you rarely reach overhead, you aren’t aware of problems in that area. Then you start training and you start to notice them.
Whilst it’s impossible to avoid accidents, through smart programming and proper coaching we can reduce the risk.
Here are 7 ways we work to keep you safe at CrossFit Border
BEGINNERS COURSE
Every new member completes the Elements Course before advancing on to CrossFit classes. In this course, you learn the fundamental movements such as how to squat, land, press, and use kettlebells. Then we work through a modified beginner workout so you can build up to a higher intensity.
10 PERSON CAP
We cap every class at 10 people. We could fill our gym with 20 people per class, but instead we focus on smaller groups so you get more of our time. This allows us to make sure that you stay safe, when you’re working hard.
WE WORK THE BASICS
We love working hard, and playing around with new movements, but nothing beats the basics. We balance between learning how to squat, deadlift and press, whilst teaching you more unfamiliar movements.
STRICT vs KIPPING
We work strict movements all the time, so next time someone says “oh don’t you just swing around on the bar” you can jump up and show them how it’s done.
WE SHOW YOU HOW TO CARE FOR YOU
Another goal of ours is to provide you with the knowledge to get fit outside our walls. With this comes basic maintenance of your body. We teach you how to keep your body moving well with mobility and flexibility.
UP TO DATE EDUCATION
We currently have two coaches with degrees in Exercise Science/Human Movement, and 1 studying. Every one of our coaches must have their level 1 and complete an intensive Coach Development Program over 4 months. We encourage all our coaches to develop themselves with extra courses to update their knowledge.
COACHES EYE
We keep an eye on you throughout your session to ensure that you are moving well. We promote intensity but technique always comes first, so starting on a broomstick or empty bar until you move right is where you begin.
